Derek Penn, Advisor & Board Member

Before shifting to a full time role as a Strategic Advisor, and Board Member to small and large organizations, Derek was most recently Head of Equity Sales and Trading with BNY Mellon overseeing the evolution of equity trading at the Firm and in the broader markets. During his tenure at BNY/Pershing he oversaw a 200% increase in production levels, and grew that Firm’s market making capacity from 1000 stocks to over 8000 names. 

Prior to this, Derek held leadership positions at Fidelity Investments responsible for the rapid expansion of their presence on the NYSE, as well as Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley. Derek is currently an independent member of the Charles Schwab Mutual Fund and ETF Board of Trustees, and serves as a mentor and advisor to numerous startups and individuals. 

An alumni of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, Derek is an active advisor of the business school as well as Duke’s Athletic Advisory Board. He’s been a guest lecturer at Baruch College, NYU, and numerous New York City Public schools, and is the best-selling author of “Diary of a Black Man on Wall Street: From Youngstown, Ohio to the Big Apple”.
